Our History

Founded in Bognor Regis in July 1982 by Alan White, Baronmead first supplied powered stairclimbers for materials handling—helping businesses transport heavy goods such as safes and photocopiers up and down stairs.

It wasn’t long before we recognised the potential of this technology to transform lives. By adapting stairclimbers for personal use, we pioneered new ways to support elderly and disabled people with safe, dignified access to stairs—well before the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act and long before such equipment was widely available.

From this innovation came the Stairmatic, one of the first stairclimbers designed specifically for people and wheelchair users. Since then, Baronmead has played a leading role in advancing stairclimber design, exporting solutions worldwide while continuing to serve customers across the UK.

For more than four decades, our mission has remained the same: improving quality of life through safe, reliable, and innovative accessibility solutions.

Worldwide Distributor

Since 1982, Baronmead has been the worldwide distributor of our own Stairmatic stairclimber, and since then has grown to represent a range of respected global brands in stair accessibility.

Exclusive UK Distributor

• In 2013, we became the exclusive UK distributor for Alber stairclimbers, including the S35 Scalamobil and S36 Scalacombi models.

• Since 2000, we have distributed the T09 tracked stairclimber manufactured by Vimec in Italy.

UK Agents

• Appointed in 2004 as UK agents for Sunwa (Japan), supplying the Stairmate Major stairclimber and CD7 Evacuation Chair.

• UK agents for Enable Access since 2000, distributing the EV180 evacuation chair and Aerolight ramps.

• In addition, we act as agents for a range of stairlifts, offering versatile solutions that can be fitted in almost any home.

The Baronmead Team

Since 1982, the Baronmead team has grown to include dedicated service technicians, product demonstrators, and a skilled management team. Today, the business is led by Graham White, son of founder Alan White, continuing the family commitment to innovation and accessibility.

We operate nationwide, with regional teams visiting client sites to demonstrate and install stairclimbers, as well as delivering comprehensive operator training. Our products are also shipped daily to customers across the world.

To ensure long-term reliability, we provide ongoing servicing and maintenance, keeping every machine working safely and at its best.
