Case Study : Stairmatic stair access for a medical society

Using a stairclimber at the Medical Society in London

Background

The Medical Society of London is the oldest surviving medical society in this country – possibly in the world. It was founded in 1773 by the Quaker physician and philanthropist Dr John Coakley Lettsom for physicians, surgeons and apothecaries who met to exchange medical news and confer about difficult cases. The Society’s wide appeal, the possession of a valuable library and freehold property ensured its success and longevity.

Originally based in the City, the Medical Society moved to its present house in 1873. Situated at the heart of London’s medical community, the Society organises a stimulating programme of lectures and social activities while providing a home for other societies.

Project Objectives

The Medical Society needed an access solution and had the following requirements :

  • Increase visitor rate with this stair access solution
  • Provide easy operation for staff to enable disabled persons to visit the otherwise inaccessible function rooms and other facilities
  • Provide an easy to use solution, encouraging regular visits from customers
  • Provide a comfortable solution for customers to go up and down stairs in a safe and dignified manner
  • Offer regular maintenance and training programme

Baronmead Solution

Due to the building’s broad spiral staircase, Baronmead’s solution was to recommend and supply a Stairmatic mobile stairclimber.

Our solution included a 1 year service contract, delivery and training for up to 8 staff onsite.

Testimonial

Nothing else was able to tackle our curved staircase

It proved impossible to fit a lift into our Grade II listed building and we could find nothing else that was able to tackle our curved staircase with such ease of operation for the rider.

It is fair to say that the service from Baronmead has always been friendly, efficient, cost effective and prompt.
